Huddersfield Civic Society hosts a week of walks and talks to celebrate hidden art gems in town

HAVE you ever noticed the 50ft wide commerce mural in Queensgate market?

No? Well you’re not alone.

Now you have the chance to not only admire the 1960s art of the indoor market but a host of other hidden artistic gems across the town on a series of guided walks.

The walks, hosted by Huddersfield Civic Society, are an effort to draw people’s attention to under-appreciated works of art around town.

The projects come as the society takes part in Civic Societies Week, a regional scheme to promote their work.

Society member Christopher Marsden said he was looking forward to enlightening people on all the things they had been missing.

He said: “Last year we had an exhibition showing different aspects of Huddersfield and people were saying ‘where’s that?’ and it was a building in the town centre that they hadn’t recognised.

“People seem to take them for granted so I thought it would be interesting to show them what we have and more.”

The tours will cover historic buildings, sculpture installations, ornamental works and pieces of art around the town centre.

Highlights of the walks include the world’s biggest sculpture of DNA in Huddersfield University, often ignored busts of great Britons on Huddersfield Town Hall, The Co-op lions and the Civic Centre columns.
