14 year sentence for Mirfield drug dealer Gary Lewin

A ‘DANGEROUS’ man who attempted to flee the country after changing his name by Deed Poll has been jailed for 14 years after police caught up with him.

While on bail for possession of a loaded handgun and Class A drugs, Mirfield man Gary Lewin was attempting to leave the country with a false passport.

But police swooped on him at a property in the Edgehill area of Liverpool and arrested him on September 29.

They discovered the 27-year-old had changed his name by Deed Poll to Gary Cook.

Yesterday a judge at Bradford Crown Court jailed him for a total of 14 years after a jury convicted him of possessing a prohibited weapon and ammunition and 125 grammes of 63% pure heroin.

DI Jim Griffiths of Kirklees CID said: "Lewin is obviously a very dangerous man.

"We actively seek out information and intelligence on individuals involved in serious and organised crime and, while the public may not see it happening, this type of result shows we are targeting this sort of criminal and inevitably they will be brought to justice.

"The sentence for Lewin is the result of 12 months of hard work by officers from West Yorkshire Police, as well as our colleagues in Merseyside, to bring this case before the court.

"The sentence given clearly shows that the courts will come down hard on any individual found to be involved in serious crime such as this."

Lewin was initially arrested by armed officers as he tried to flee from a house in Luck Lane, Marsh, last June.

When officers searched the property they found a loaded Smith and Wesson revolver and heroin hidden under a sofa.
