A JOBS boost is on its way to Brighouse.

Leading high street store Boyes will create 25 jobs when it opens a branch of the shop later in the summer.

A re-fit is currently taking place in the former Sunwin House at King Street.

Boyes, which has 37 branches mainly in the north of England, is expected to open for business at the end of August.

They are known for selling household, garden, clothing and electrical items.

The property was formerly occupied by Co-op, but they relocated in 2005.

Some of the building is used by Bon Marche and Peacock’s and Boyes will trade over two floors.

The news has been welcomed by town councillors.

Clr Colin Stout said: “When you think about the state of the economy at the moment, it is really good for the town that we are introducing new businesses.”

It’s been helped by plans to free up car parking spaces in the town centre for shoppers. Complaints had been made that taxi drivers were parking in the free spaces while they waited for a fare.

And the town centre events have also helped boost trade. The recent Italian market proved a hit, bringing in hundreds of shoppers. More markets are planned for the future.

It is a much-needed boost for jobs in the town. Earlier this year, 140 jobs were lost when UV Modular went into receivership.

In 1881 William Boyes opened a small store in Eastborough, Scarborough, selling odd lots and remnants from merchants.

William rented a large warehouse just off the main street where business continued to grow. By 1886 he purchased further units in Market Street and Queen Street and knocked them into one large store and named it The Remnant Warehouse.

Older customers in Scarborough still refer to the shop as The Rem. As time went on, William expanded his range and bought other clearance lines from merchants, developing the warehouse into a department store.

Today W Boyes and Co Ltd operate 36 stores throughout Yorkshire, the North East, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.
