Slaithwaite’s Jay Jones is heading to the capital to tread the boards

A STAGESTRUCK 16-year-old is cooking up a career for himself by treading the boards in London.

Jay Jones of Slaithwaite is to appear in the National Youth Theatre’s (NYT) production Relish – the story of the first celebrity chef.

It’s just the latest in a series of roles for the talented teenager, who is also a musician and a gymnast.

Jay, a student of the Bernadette Hey School of Theatre Dance in Marsden, has appeared as the Mouse King with the English Youth Ballet, as Oliver at the Lawrence Batley Theatre and as the Artful Dodger at Manchester Palace.

The new play in London tells the story of Alexis Soyer, who long before Delia, Jamie and Nigella became the name to watch in the culinary world.

Jay said: “It’s set just after the French Revolution and the character comes over from France to England and makes his name.

“It’s a show with a lot of interaction and even live cooking.

“Although I’m in the show I don’t even know who I’m playing yet. I’ll find out in rehearsals but I know I’ll be dancing and playing.

“I’ll be on the tuba on stage as well as acting because part of my call back for auditions with the NYT was musical.

“It’s not just the first time I’ve acted in London, it’s the first time with the NYT.

“It draws from young people across the country and I auditioned in 2008 in Manchester.
