Greenhead College students celebrate A-level success

THERE were cheers and hugs aplenty yesterday when students celebrated their A-level results.

Expressions of joy rang through the halls of Huddersfield’s Greenhead College as friends gathered to share their good news.

In previous years the college has seen nervy students queueing round the block for the all important envelopes.

But this year the wait was less nail biting as for the first time they were able to view their results online from 6am.

The new system was introduced to give pupils the best possible chance if the results didn’t go their way.

However judging by the beaming smiles on display, many were in the mood for celebration rather than commiseration.

Students achieved a 99% pass rate – higher than this year’s national average of 97.6% – with one in four clinching a grade A.

And the college was marking another first this year as 11% of those taking exams gained the new A* grade, again beating the national average which was 8%.

A total of 364 students achieved the grade, with three receiving a fantastic five A* grades.

They were Dominic Ballard – biology, French, chemistry, general studies and extended project; Heather Plumpton – biology, chemistry, maths, general studies, extended project; and Gregory Barrett – geography, biology, psychology, general studies, extended project.

Principal Martin Rostron said: "It has been another outstanding year of achievements; well done to the class of 2010 who have maintained the standards of their predecessors.

"The great majority have reached their targets and will move onto universities or jobs of their choice.

"It has been another excellent year with an A-level pass rate of 99% and a high proportion of high grades; two out of every five were passed at the top grade.
