“Our members are having a formula applied to them retrospectively. It wasn’t used when managers went through their restructure,” he said.
Mr Holmes added that it was wrong for council workers to suffer compulsory redundancies because of the deficit. “Workers are being asked to pay for someone else’s crisis,” he said.
Kirklees Unison’s members will be balloted between September 9 and September 29. If they vote for a strike there will be five days of industrial action in mid-October.
Mr Holmes believes the people of Huddersfield will back his members if there is a strike.
He said: “With very few exceptions, the public is totally supportive.”
