MOST children don’t want the summer holidays to end.

But nine-year-old Sophie Edwards can’t wait to get back to school.

The Newsome girl has battled leukaemia for the last two years.

But now Sophie is ready to go back to school full-time for the first time since she was diagnosed with the disease in 2008.

Dad Andrew said: "She loves school and she’s really looking forward to it. She can’t wait for the term to start."

Sophie hasn’t been to school full-time since she was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia in February 2008.

She spent 10 weeks having chemotherapy at St James’ Hospital in Leeds before under- going a bone marrow transplant.

This was followed by months in quarantine at her Newsome home and three visits a week to St James’ for tests.

Sophie still has to take drugs every day to cope with spleen loss and is also having physiotherapy to stretch her hamstrings which were stunted by the treatment. She also has to visit Leeds General Infirmary every fortnight for blood tests.

The treatment has affected Sophie’s education.

Andrew said: "She got very tired because of the radiotherapy so she couldn’t manage full days at school.

"She started back at school part-time for a few weeks before the summer but she still gets tired very easily."
