VANDALS carried out a spate of attacks on 10 cars in Newsome, causing damage running into thousands of pounds.

But people living in Newsome have praised police officers for already arresting one youth in connection with the crimes.

Cars at Falcon Street, Edale Avenue, Croftlands and Jackroyd Lane were damaged in the early hours of yesterday Tuesday morning.

Many had their windscreens smashed.

Victim David Higgins, who lives at Falcon Street, said he was sickened by the attack.

He said: "A neighbour heard a lot of banging and crashing outside just after midnight.

"When I got up I found out the windscreen of my Volvo S80 saloon had been smashed.

"It will cost around £200 to replace, but it’s not just that, it’s work as well.

"I’m an HGV driver and should have been going to work in the early hours of the morning."

Mr Higgins, 41, who lives at the address with his family, said there had been incidents in the past in the Newsome area when several cars had their tyres slashed.

Earlier this year several cars were damaged during a spate of attacks in and around Newsome Road.
