Signs of the times outside Honley High School - but 11 of them?
Honley High School
A DRIVER is calling on the council to cut back on needless road signs.
Graham Munro, from Meltham, says he has counted 11 large warnings outside Honley High School, all giving the same No Waiting information.
It comes after the Communities Secretary Eric Pickles called on South Yorkshire Council to cut back on what he described as "street clutter".
He believed that excessive signage is not only a waste of money, but detracts from the essential character of an area.
Mr Munro said: "These signs are very big and a lot of them are on new poles so in difficult financial times it’s a considerable cost. Not only is it the expense of materials but it’s quite an engineering job.
"I know there is an issue with irresponsible parking around schools, but there are zig zags on the road and just adding more signs does not help.
"Drivers are ignoring them so the council hasn’t gone about this right.
"If this is a reflection of the outside of every school then the cost must be running into tens of thousands of pounds.
"The simple fact is when signs become the norm they get ignored – there are just too many of them.
"Something should be done because they are an eyesore."
Kirklees Council has said while it does have an obligation to safety it is checking through the district for redundant signs which can be removed.
During his intervention on the state of streets, MP Eric Pickles accused officials of turning streets into obstacle courses
He said that cutting the intrusions left streets feeling fresher and more authentic; it also made them easier to clean.
Excessive street clutter has also been a problem for disabled people who have to negotiate bollards and signs.
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said: "Unnecessary street furniture is a waste of money and leaves streets looking like scrapyards."
