Brockholes dad John Collins died from head injuries, an inquest heard.

John Collins

Shirley, 44, lived across the road from him at Oakes Avenue and they had grown to be good friends.

She said: “He was hopeless at doing his shopping and was always coming over here and asking if I had any tea bags or potatoes.

“When I came down in the morning and opened the window he’d say: ‘Get the kettle on’.

“He wouldn’t have hurt anybody, I can’t believe this could have happened to him. We were good friends. I’m still in shock.”

Shirley was one of the first people at the bloody scene and saw Mr Collins lying in the street at around 7.45pm.

She accompanied him and his two brothers Mike and David to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Mr Collins was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary where he died in the early hours of the following day.
