Grange Moor grandfather John Buckley died after crash ‘while not wearing seatbelt’

Pc Andrew Oversby said Mr Buckley’s seatbelt was in the folded back position, indicating he had not been wearing it as it was likely to have been cut by paramedics if he had.

He said the cars had been travelling at between 35mph and 40mph, which was evident due to the damage to the cars.

Mr Buckley’s family said at the inquest that they believed Ben Booth Lane needed improvements as a housing estate had recently been built and more cars were using the junction.

Coroner Roger Whittaker recorded a verdict of accidental death, telling Mr Hart he should not blame himself.

He added: “I think this junction needs looking at and I shall write to the highway authority asking them to explore ways of improving it.

“I am concerned that there is nowhere safe to wait while turning right from Wakefield Road into Ben Booth Lane.

“I will be asking for an explanation and see what can be done.”
