Former Huddersfield Giants star Martin Aspinwall quizzed over pub assault

FORMER Giants player Martin Aspinwall has been arrested for assault.

The rugby league star was detained by Wigan Police after he was accused of breaking a man’s cheekbone in a pub bust-up.

Aspinwall, who formerly played for Wigan Warriors, is alleged to have launched the assault following an argument in the Walkabout bar on King Street, Wigan.

It is understood that the alleged victim is an employee of Aspinwall’s former agent Andrew Clarke.

Aspinwall, 28, who has toured Australia with Great Britain, was released by Super League outfit Huddersfield Giants in July.

His release was confirmed by the Galpharm Stadium club on July 23 – hours after the alleged incident in Wigan.

Aspinwall, who is not contracted to any club and is believed to be still suffering from a groin injury, was arrested at Wigan police station via a prior appointment on August 16. It is understood he offered no comment in police interviews.

The alleged attack was said to have taken place on the night of Thursday, July 22.

Aspinwall has been bailed until later this month.

Born in Wigan, he came through the ranks at his home town club and made his first team debut in 2001 at the age of 19.

In 2003 he was selected for England A and Lancashire.

That year he played for Wigan in the sport’s showcase Grand Final at Old Trafford.

In 2005 he moved to Huddersfield after becoming a free agent, to the surprise of many.

He played for the Yorkshire club in their 2006 Challenge Cup final defeat to St Helens and later that year he was picked in a 25-man Great Britain squad to tour Australia and New Zealand.
