Teenage Huddersfield sportsman Jack Mulhall battles leukaemia

A TALENTED teenage sportsman is battling leukaemia.

Jack Mulhall, 14, is undergoing chemotherapy at Leeds General Infirmary with his parents, Tony and Joanne, at his bedside.

And family and friends are hoping the treatment will be a success, after the shock diagnosis of lymphoma during the school holidays.

Now they are organising a charity Twenty/20 cricket match on Sunday to raise funds for the hospital and for research into the disease.

Jack, a pupil at King James’ School in Almondbury, is known as both a promising cricketer and footballer.

He has followed his dad Tony into the cricket team at Lascelles Hall and has also represented Huddersfield Under 13s in the prestigious Lords Taverners competition.

In addition, the youngster is a player with Kirkheaton in the RCD Junior Football League in Huddersfield.

Sunday’s charity match at Lascelles Hall at 2pm will feature a team from the home club against a side of players who have played cricket with Tony Mulhall in Huddersfield over the years.

Jack’s uncle Danny Mulhall said: “It all came as such a terrible shock, especially as we have seen my mother Susan, who is Jack’s grandmother, battling against cancer.

“She developed cancer of the oesophagus and was really ill but thankfully came through it.

“Jack went on holiday to Cyprus with Tony, his mum Joanne and his sister Sophie, 11, at the start of the summer school holidays.

“Jack found a lump on his neck that was painful so they took him to a local doctor. He carried out blood tests and other checks but they all came back clear.

“The family completed their holiday, but Jack was still unwell and went to see his local GP when they got back. He thought it may be glandular fever and was treating him for that.

“Three weeks ago, Jack was due to play for the Under 15s in a game at Lascelles Hall but turned up in a terrible state. He was obviously very ill so his parents took him to the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
