A PENSIONER was subjected to a terrifying sexual assault at the hands of intruders in her own home.

The 66-year-old, who lives in Newsome, was attacked after her flat was broken into at about 6am yesterday.

The intruders fled minutes later. It is not known if they stole anything.

The woman was being looked after by police yesterday evening as she recovered from the attack.

Detectives from West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major enquiry team (HMET) arrested two men from a nearby house.

A police spokesman said: “A short time after the report, two men, aged 20 and 32, were arrested from a house on Caldercliffe Road, in the Berry Brow area.

“Both are currently in custody pending further enquiries.

“The woman was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where she is being looked after by specially trained professionals.”

Both men were later released.

Police taped off several houses and a section of the street where the incident happened.

Officers stood guard as forensic teams combed the flat and surrounding area for evidence.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said the victim lived with her husband.

The mother-of-two said: “I had just got up with my children but I didn’t hear anything. Then I looked out of the window and saw all the police.

“I feel so sad for her. What an horrendous thing to happen.

“I see them coming and going quite often. We’ll have a chat about my children.

“Her husband has been a bit poorly recently.

“It’s terrible.”

Veronica Dalton, 77, lives nearby.

She said an intruder had walked into her flat two weeks ago.

She said: “I heard the door opening and I called out, then I went into the hallway and saw a fellow running out.

“I just saw his back, but I gave a description to the police. He didn’t take anything.

“Then I heard a woman had her purse taken about 10 minutes later.

“I hope this woman’s OK. It’s a frightening thing.”
