Councillors warn future residents of Gasworks site: ‘don’t compain about Cummins’

PLANNERS have approved a major development – but warned future residents they will have to put up with noise from a nearby factory.

Kirklees Council yesterday backed the proposal for shops, offices and flats at the old gasworks site on St Andrew’s Road.

But councillors on the Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee warned future residents of the 15 apartments they would have to tolerate the noise from Cummins Turbo Technologies next door.

Labour’s Clr Molly Walton, who represents Crosland Moor and Netherton, said: “This town was built on houses next to mills.

“There’s a responsibility on the people who buy these properties. It’s a case of buyer beware.”

Colne Valley Lib Dem Clr Nicola Turner added: “We need to protect Cummins.”

Denby Dale Conservative Clr John Cook also spoke up for the company.

He said: “These proposed flats would be in very close proximity to industrial buildings. Anyone who moves in will have to remember that this is an industrial area, not a residential area.

“We can’t have anything which would be detrimental to Cummins.”

Speaking on behalf of the company, Robert Halstead told councillors: “We’ve got no problem at all with the majority of the scheme – the only issue is the block of flats on the southern boundary right next to Cummins.
