Former Stile Common Infants School may be demolished

A FORMER infants school that has stood empty since last year is likely to be demolished.
The future of the old Stile Common Infant and Nursery School in Plane Street, Newsome, has been uncertain since pupils were moved to the newly-built Hillside Primary School last November.
They joined pupils from Stile Common Junior School at the new school, which cost £7.4m and is on Headfield Road.
The Victorian infants school building, built in 1876, has been blighted by vandalism and has been a target for copper thieves.
Newsome councillor Julie Stewart-Turner said: “The building is basically falling down anyway, it’s in such a bad state of repair.
“It’s not fit for use by any services at the moment, so I can’t see any alternative but to pull it down.”
A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “The council is looking into the possibility of demolishing the former school and this is the favoured option.
“If demolition was agreed, the stone would be retained by the demolition contractor and would off-set the cost of demolition.
“The site is then likely to be offered for sale.”
