Family of murdered Huddersfield shopkeeper Gurmail Singh reaction: Hatred and revulsion at killers

“NO words can express our hatred for these individuals and our utter revulsion at the crime they committed.”

That was the emotional reaction from the family of Gurmail Singh following the conviction of two men for his murder and two others for their part in the robbery that led to his death.

Mr Singh’s son, 36-year-old Jasmohan Singh Hayre – better known as Jas or Juggy – spoke outside Cowcliffe Convenience Stores following the end of the trial yesterday.

He said: “We have sat through the whole trial and we have seen no remorse from those convicted.

“No words can express our hatred for these individuals and our utter revulsion at the crime they committed.

“Their families also sat in court listening to what was being said.

“How do they feel when they know their sons and brothers are responsible for the death of my father?

“We feel as a family that no matter what the sentence is for those found guilty it can never be enough.”

Jas and his brother Maninder, 39 – better known as Bobby – sat through the entire six-week trial at Bradford Crown Court.

Speaking on behalf of his brother and sister, Narinder, 37, Jas said they were relieved the trial was over.

He added: “This is a process that no family should have to go through.

“However, we are relieved that those who committed this terrible crime have now been found guilty.”

He said Mr Singh was a loving husband to their mother, Mohinder Kaur, and a devoted father and grandfather-of-five.

Mrs Kaur’s health has deteriorated rapidly in the wake of her husband’s death and Jas added: “It is sad to see her without her loving and caring husband beside her at this difficult time.”

Jas said Mr Singh was a constant source of strength, wisdom and respect to his brothers and sisters and a helpful and honest member of the Sikh community.
