Welcome for new Birkenshaw school

PARENTS have welcomed the chance to set up their own high school.
Education secretary Michael Gove has given the go-ahead for a new school on the site of Birkenshaw Middle School which would be free from Kirklees Council control.
Birstall, Birkenshaw and Gomersal Parents’ Alliance has been campaigning for three years to get a new school in the village rather than having to send their children to Batley.
Spokesman Robert Thornton said yesterday: “Our school will be an all-ability state-funded one that has been set up in response to parental and educational demand.
“Just like children in all state schools, every individual pupil will be allocated a fixed amount of money.
“With regards to capital funding, I want to be very clear we are not taking anything away from local authority schools, as the funding streams are entirely separate.
“All we ever wanted was the opportunity of choice for a decent local education and Mr Gove has provided us with a platform for that challenge.”
Mr Gove has given the green light to 25 free schools, which opponents say will damage neighbouring schools.
