Previous convictions for robbery.

Said during his evidence he “enjoyed” carrying out robberies.

Described as being unable to accept his role in the killing. The judge branded him a danger to the public. He told him: “You have a propensity for violence with no regard for others.”

Umare Aslam, 20

Coniston Avenue, Dalton,

Six-and-a-half years for robbery.

No previous convictions.

Nicknamed ‘Crazy’.

Described as “less sophisticated and less worldly wise than some of your co-accused” and of “low cognitive ability.”

Was recruited by others to take part and acceded to peer pressure.

Rehman Afzal, 18

Jacinth Court, Fartown

Five years and four months for robbery.

On police bail for an allegation of attempted murder at the time of the offence. Previous conviction for shoplifting and aggravated vehicle taking.

Described by the judge as very bright with a “remarkable ability to stand shoulder to shoulder with the leading advocates in the land.”

Achieved excellent GCSEs and was taking “demanding” A-levels at the time of the offence. Described as “number two” in the planning of the robbery.

Shoaib Khan, 18

Calton Street, Hillhouse

Eight months for assisting an offender.

Previous conviction for assault.

A “bright boy” who was “intelligent and articulate.”

The judge told him: “You are a young man who needs to be very careful. You are far too close to criminal activity.”
