A SENIOR member of Huddersfield’s Sikh community said the sentencing of Gurmail Singh’s killers meant his family and friends could start to try to move on.

Inderpal Randhawa, general secretary of the Sikh temple at Springwood where Mr Singh was a member, said the sentences given to murderers Nabeel Shafi and Muawaz Khalid were “fair.”

He added: “People will try to go back to normal life now.

“It has been a long process for everyone, especially Mr Singh’s family, talking all the time about the court case, having to speak to the police and hear in court what happened.

“It is very hard for them and has affected the whole community – Muslim, Christian and Hindu as well as the Sikh community.”

Mr Randhawa, who runs a convenience shop in Linthwaite, added: “I hope this sentence will send a message to other people to think before they do something stupid.”
