HOLME Valley Mountain Rescue Team saved an elderly woman who was missing and suffering from hypothermia.
In its third callout of the week the team responded to a West Yorkshire Police request for help in recovering the woman on farmland in the Cartworth Moor and Washpit area, off Dunford Road, Holmfirth, on Thursday night.
She was carried across steep and uneven ground to the nearest lane, Cartworth Moor Road. The woman victim lives in the Washpit area.
The Marsden-based team was mobilised by pager at 8.30pm on Thursday .
She was located after a brief search in an area inaccessible by road.
The team provided treatment then stretchered the woman to safety.
She was transferred to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
Owen Phillips, an assistant leader, said: “We had a good, fast turn out from the team and were able to quickly locate the casualty and have her in an ambulance on the way to hospital within an hour and a half of being called.
“Team members are all volunteers and will drop whatever they are doing to assist when our pagers go off.
“For tasks such as this we can provide manpower and specialist techniques and equipment that the other emergency services don’t use.
“Where the casualty was located it would have been impossible for an ambulance crew to get to her. We have the skills and the kit to transport a casualty across steep and uneven ground and keep them warm and as comfortable as possible during the evacuation.
“People assume we are there solely to help people on the moors or the crags, but a lot of our calls are to missing people in rural or semi-urban areas, where our search expertise still applies.
“The assistance we can offer with difficult-to-reach casualties has been invaluable to the ambulance service on numerous occasions. This rescue was a great example of how we can all make a real difference to one person.”
On Saturday the team was called to assist police with another missing person and on Sunday they were mobilised by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to help with an evacuation in Meltham.
