IT has been a “hidden gem” in Huddersfield for years.

But now the fortunes of Byram Arcade are set for a revival.

Council officials, who own the 130-year-old complex, are confident of having every shop unit in use by the end of the month – for the first time in years.

And they are also planning to use the Arcade for some of the celebrations planned for the spectacular Festival of Light early next month.

By the end of November, all 25 retail units will be occupied and open to the public as shops which is an increase of 25% from this time last year.

A spokesman said: “It is displaying a full resurgence as it becomes the focal point for independent shopping in the town.”

Byram Arcade, which is managed by Kirklees Council, dates back to 1880 when it was built by architect William Henry Crossland.

The arcade’s latest tenants include interior designers Shibusa Interiors, yarn shop Spun and fashion boutique The Connoisseur’s Independent Trading Post.

Together, all the shops provide an eclectic mix of fashion, home wares, art and gifts, which is proving appealing for customers.

Clr Peter McBride, Kirklees Cabinet member for Regeneration said: “Byram Arcade is a fantastic building and I’m delighted that shop owners are realising its potential.

“To have the space fully let in time for Christmas is very positive for Huddersfield.

“The tenants are all working together to increase the profile of the arcade and I would urge visitors to go and have a look as they will be amazed at the range of shops now open.”

For this year’s Festival of Light, Byram Arcade will be transformed into a ballroom and live music venue in an exciting addition to the event programme.

On Friday, December 3, and Saturday, December 4, Ragroof Theatre will perform spectacular dance routines and then invite audiences to have a go themselves.

Ragroof’s stylish tea dances are for all ages and levels of experience, giving festival-goers and shoppers the chance to trip the light fantastic to the sounds of the roaring 20s, 30s and 40s with a dash of Latin and scintillating swing. The dances will take place from 4pm on Friday and 1pm on Saturday.

Students from the Highfields Centre at Kirklees College will be adding to the atmosphere on December 4 with three acts performing acoustic music.

Midnight Scenario, Boats and Hoes and Profound Sounds will be in the Arcade from 11am to 12.30pm and 4pm to 7pm.

All three acts have been making waves in local music circles.

Sarah Mellor, owner of boutique Pretty Little Things, said: “It’s fantastic that Byram Arcade is part of this year’s Festival of Light.

“It’s a great event and we’re all looking forward to welcoming festival goers into the building. Pretty Little Things has been open in the arcade for three months now and we really enjoy being here.

“With new shops opening all the time, the arcade is making a real name for itself as a destination for independent shopping.”
