Shelley College gets visit from the Moon

YOUNG people handled material from out of this world.

The Science and Technology Facilities Council brought samples of moon rock and lunar dust to Shelley College.

The materials were collected by Nasa astronauts during missions to the Moon in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

They brought back 382kg of lunar rock, most of which is used by scientists to study the Moon. However, a small proportion of the material is used to develop science educational packages.

Prof Keith Mason of the Science and Technology Facilities Council said: “It’s amazing that almost 40 years after the lunar samples were collected, scientists are still not sure how the Moon formed.”
