Top News on Colne Road caught selling booze to under 18s

A NEWSAGENT got caught selling booze to youngsters and the shop will now have its license reviewed.

A staff member at Top News on Colne Road sold alcohol to teens who were sent in to the shop to buy booze by West Yorkshire Police officers.

The operation was part of a forcewide crack down on licensed premises selling to under 18s – with youngsters attempting to buy alcohol from 72 premises across the county.

Leeds District Licensing Officer, Sgt Rob Fullilove, co-ordinated the operation. He said: “There is a clear link between alcohol and anti-social behaviour among young people and they can also make themselves vulnerable and more likely to be a victim of crime through binge-drinking.

“While we don’t want to be seen as killjoys during a period that is all about celebrating and enjoying yourself, underage drinking is still a serious issue and test purchasing is just one of a continuing number of tactics that we use to combat it.

“We will be carrying out further test purchases over the festive period and we urge licensees to work with us and keep alcohol out of the hands of young people.”
