Domestic violence victims urged to seek support this Christmas

VICTIMS of domestic violence are being urged to seek support during the festive season.

Relationships can hit problems during this time with heavier drinking, money worries and unrealistic expectations contributing to a seasonal rise in domestic violence-related crimes and incidents.

Police officers are vowing to tackle the problem, saying they will give victims the support they need.

Domestic violence covers psychological, emotional, physical, sexual and financial abuse between adults who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members.

Men and women are affected including those in same sex relationships.

And statistics show victims of domestic suffer more repeat attacks than those of any other crime.

Inspector Andrew Leonard of Kirklees Police Safeguarding Unit, said: “Every week we see the effects of many types of domestic abuse.

“Unfortunately this number increases around December and January and is fuelled by alcohol and family pressures.

“The police take reports of domestic violence extremely seriously and we are committed to helping and protecting the victims of domestic violence in partnership with many organisations including Kirklees Council and the Probation Service, to get the best possible outcome for the victim and their children.”

Clr Peter O’Neill, Kirklees Council Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Most people look forward to spending more time with their family during the festive season.

“But people affected by domestic violence dread this time of year and it can be an added pressure.

“Victims do not have to suffer in silence or behind closed doors.
