HUDDERSFIELD’S hills and valleys are a big attraction for tourists.
A new survey shows that many of the thousands of visitors who head to the town each year come mainly for the scenery.
But tourism officials believe other attractions such as the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and sporting fixtures also play a part.
Details of the visits emerged today in a new survey of foreign tourists flocking to the UK.
Foreign visitors come to the UK for the cuisine and the clothing as much as the castles, according to a survey.
Overseas holidaymakers said eating in restaurants was the their top activity when coming to the UK, the poll by the VisitBritain organisation found.
The second most important activity was shopping for clothes and accessories, followed by visiting famous buildings and monuments.
Many tourists visiting Kirklees still head for Holmfirth – famed for years as the “home” of the hit comedy series Last Of The Summer Wine.
The programme helped boost tourism with its stunning backdrop of the rolling countryside across the Holme Valley.
But surveys show there are others who visit for brief stays to coincide with concerts, events and sports matches.
VisitBritain strategy and communications director Patricia Yates said: “This detailed report gives us a fascinating insight into exactly what attracted 30 million overseas visitors to Britain last year.
