IT WAS a case of bangers and cash when two friends drove an old car half way across Europe for charity.

Dean Winter and Lee Taylor, from Cowlersley, raised more than £6,000 for the NSPCC by taking part in the annual Scally Rally.

The pair spent several months and hundreds of pounds turning a clapped out 15-year-old Fiat Tempra – bought for £70 from a scrapyard – into a roadworthy drive capable of travelling the 1,400 miles from Calais in France to Rimini in Italy.

Dean, 45, a part-time driving instructor, said: “It needed a lot of TLC, but it did absolutely brilliantly, started every time and got us all the way there and back in one piece.”

Participants in the Scally Rally must buy a car for no more than £100. Vehicles have to be road legal and have passed an MOT.

Dean and Lee spent four days completing the route.

“It’s something that I’d consider doing again, but maybe after taking the year off,” Dean added.
