£1m cuts to Huddersfield Sports Centre – before work has even started

PLANS for Huddersfield’s new sports centre are being scaled back – before building work has even started.

Cuts of more than £900,000 are being made on the £36m centre.

It means there will be no place in the new centre for bowlers.

The current Sports Centre, in Southgate, boasts a busy indoor bowling green.

Kirklees Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan said that “due to an attack on local authority funding, we have no choice but to scale back on certain facilities”.

The design specification is being altered to reduce costs, the proposed bowling green has been axed and environmentally-friendly features are being cut.

The Spring Grove centre will replace the existing one at Southgate, which Clr Khan has branded a “liability for council taxpayers”.

The council say they are “mindful of 2012 being the target and are doing everything we can to deliver to that timescale”.

The cuts come as the council looks to make £80m of savings.
