New face for two Huddersfield churches
TWO Huddersfield churches have a new priest after six months without a clergyman.
The Rev David Carpenter has taken over at St John’s Church in Birkby and Christ Church Woodhouse.
He was welcomed to Huddersfield at a special service led by the Bishop of Pontefract the Rt Rev Tony Robinson at St John’s on Thursday.
More than 130 worshippers gathered to welcome Rev Carpenter, who has moved from a role at Halifax Minster.
St John’s warden Tony Clarke said: “It was a very good service and it was nice to have a full church. It really lifted us.”
Both churches have been without a clergyman since Rev Sue Clarke moved to Thornhill in August, 2010.
Retired priests have been filling in every Sunday for the last six months.
Mr Clarke said: “It’s a relief to get a regular priest because there was no cover when something came up during the week.”
