Traffic signs in St George’s Square not enforceable
RED-FACED civic officials have blundered over road signs in Huddersfield’s new-look St George’s Square.
A Kirklees Council employee failed to get authorisation for the various restricted zone signs in the revamped square at the heart of Huddersfield.
And that means they cannot be enforced.
The council has now had to go to the Department for Transport and get authorisation for the various signs, which control parking and access to parts of the square.
It is the latest embarrassment over the development of Huddersfield’s centrepiece.
The £5m project was beset by problems.
They included:
l The main contractor Wrekin going bust
l A row over Chinese granite being used instead of Yorkshire stone
l Long delays in work being completed
l Staining problems on the feature black granite water wall
l Criticism of a lack of supervision over the whole project
The problems with the signs surfaced after a Freedom of Information request by Adam Brookes, of Huddersfield.
