A HUDDERSFIELD health chief has died.

Sukhdev Sharma was the chairman of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Sharma lived in Halifax and was married with four children.

He had been appointed chairman of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust in October, 2007.

Mr Sharma was a former chief executive of the Commission for Racial Equality in London until 1998 and before his appointment to the Trust was chairman of the South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust – a position he held since 2002.

He was also a chairman of the former Calderdale and Kirklees Health Authority.

He was awarded a CBE in 1998 for services to the community.
