Rastrick pianist Lydia Wyatt to perform on stage with renowned musician Lang Lang

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Lydia Wyatt is tuning up for an appearance alongside one of the world’s greatest pianists.

Lydia has been selected to play with Lang Lang, a renowned Chinese concert pianist, on stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

For Lydia, a Rastrick High School pupil, it is a dream come true.

She began playing piano aged five and would like to be a professional musician when she leaves school. She also plays the flute.

The young virtuosa will take to the stage as part of the Lang Lang Inspires project along with 100 other young pianists.

Proud mum Helen, of Rastrick, said: “She’s overwhelmed about it. It’s an amazing achievement and a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Lydia has won several Mrs Sunderland Music Festival classes over the years.

Tonight Lydia will perform with other Rastrick students in a mass musical concert at Huddersfield Town Hall to celebrate the school’s Silver Jubilee.

In May Lydia will spend two days in London, rehearsing all day Saturday and Sunday culminating in a performance on the Sunday evening.

The concert will be in the form of a ‘piano orchestra’ with 50 grand pianos on stage playing simultaneously.

They will perform three pieces – Schubert’s March Militaire, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries and Beethoven’s Symphony Number Five (Fourth Movement).

Lydia’s parents, Helen and Richard, will watch her. Brother Joe hasn’t followed in her musical footsteps, preferring sport to music.

Helen added: “She’s a very talented flautist and I think she would like to be part of an orchestra and be a professional musician when shes older, she’s very dedicated to it.”

Lang Lang lives in New York, but is well known in Europe and North America.

Music critics have described him as being a “classical prodigy and rock-like superstar”.

Lydia will take to the stage at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, May 22.
