A PROFESSIONAL rugby league player has been charged in connection with an alleged attack on a young woman.
Belinda Kelly feared for the sight in her left eye following the incident in Yates Bar in Huddersfield town centre at around 1am on February 13.
Greg Johnson, who was in the Huddersfield Giants squad at the time and on a season-long loan to Batley Bulldogs, now plays for Wakefield Wildcats.
He was formally charged when he answered his police bail yesterday.
He has now been charged with wounding with intent and a sexual assault.
The 20-year-old winger will appear before Huddersfield Magistrates on Friday, May 6.
Despite her injuries, 26-year-old Belinda – nee Coldwell – got married to fiance Chris Kelly three weeks later at Huddersfield Methodist Mission.
Mrs Kelly, of Crosland Moor – a receptionist at an accountancy firm – had been going out with Chris for six years and they were at a leaving party for his cousin when the incident happened.
She was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and then transferred to Calderdale Royal Hospital for specialist treatment to her damaged eye.
She needed stitches in injuries to her face.
