Huddersfield Town’s £5m training centre faces first hurdle

COUNCILLORS will decide next week whether to get the ball rolling on Town’s ambitious plans for a new training complex.

The club bought Syngenta Sports and Fitness Club – known as the Rec Club – last year.

Town plan to set up a new £5m state-of-the-art training complex at the Leeds Road site.

Their proposals for the Canalside development include a designated building for Town with 10 changing rooms, IT and video room, offices and investment of more than £100,000 per pitch to create a Premier League-standard centre.

The club has also pledged to improve facilities for Rec Club members and the public.

The first stage of the revamp goes in front of Kirklees Council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee next week. The five-hectare site currently includes a clubhouse, tennis courts, two bowling greens, a football pitch, a cricket pitch and several temporary buildings.

Town have asked Kirklees for permission to relocate the bowling and cricket pavilions and portable changing rooms to make way for the club’s new training centre.
