STUDENTS starting at Huddersfield University from 2012 can expect to fork out just under £8,000 a year in tuition fees.
This morning university bosses revealed that they would be charging £7,950 a year.
Leeds University had already announced it would be charging £9,000 - the maximum allowed under new rules. Leeds Met has said it will charge £8,500 a year.
Sheffield University has also plumped for the maxiumum of £9,000.
In a statement on their website, the Huddersfield University bosses said: "Along with universities across the country, we are having to increase our tuition fees to compensate for the significant cuts in direct university funding being brought in by the Government.
"If you are due to start with us in September 2012 your tuition fee will be £7,950, subject to agreement by the Office of Fair Access.
"So why have we decided to set our fee at £7,950? It is because we want to set a fee level that strikes a balance between compensating for government cuts and being fair to you. As such, we've decided not to set the highest fee of £9,000 because we don't need to.
"Our fee of £7,950 partially compensates for the amount of funding we are losing from the Government. So we'll still be able to provide you with a top notch education, first class facilities and prepare you for the world of work, without saddling you with unnecessary debt. In short, we are setting fair fees and you get a priceless education.
The statement adds: "Remember, you dont pay anything while you are studying. Repayments only start once you find a job and earn more than £21,000 a year. In fact, even when you start earning £25,000 you'll only be paying back at a rate of £1 a day, which is less than a cup of coffee."
The new pricing structure has been backed by the University of Huddersfield Student Union president Matt Christie, who said: "Through speaking to students, we have laid out strong principles through which to negotiate with senior staff at the university on how much the fee will be.
