Pat Walls is carving out a piece of history at Shepley

A HOLMFIRTH sculptor is carving out a piece of history.

Pat Walls is creating a seven-foot tall stone statue which will have pride of place for decades to come outside the new Brackenhall children’s hospice

Sculpture

He has been working full time on the sculpture at Marshall’s Appleton quarry in Shepley for the last two weeks.

Mr Walls is creating a sculpture representing two swirling figures from a four-ton slab of Portland limestone.

The rock has been donated by Albion Stone.

His inspiration and models for the work are his two daughters Georgie, 10, and Beth, six, both pupils at Upperthong Junior and Infant School.

Mr Walls began the carving when he was working as a full-time sculptor on a project with Portland Sculpture and Quarry Trust.

Funding was withdrawn, but he decided to continue with the sculpture and donate it to the Forget Me Not Trust for the new hospice, which is due to be completed later this year.

Since the downturn in arts grants, he has had to take a different job, but is giving up all of his holidays and spare time to finish the sculpture at the Shepley quarry.
