Hardy residents tidy up Meltham village centre in community clean-up

TWO community clean-ups in Huddersfield proved big successes.

Litter and weeds were blighting a village centre so a group of hardy Meltham residents decided to do something about it – they spent the morning cleaning them up.

And a group of young people helped clean up grot spots in Bradley, Crosland Moor and Rawthorpe.

In Meltham,Clr Terry Lyons was called by the florists in the centre of the village who asked if he could help.

Clr Lyons said: “They told me it was mounting up and obviously all of the shopkeepers want something done about it.

“We’ve got the Scarecrow Festival on Monday soas we want to village looking its best.

“I haven’t been able to get in touch with Kirklees, but if we waited for them to do it it’d be next week.

“This needs sorting now and some proper action.”

Residents described the village centre as a bit of a mess, with litter from take-aways mounting up out of the bins provided.

The volunteers cleared the litter.

Clr Lyons added: “I managed to get half a dozen people to come along and get this sorted – it just needs people to get stuck in.
