A TEENAGE girl was among a gang of four people arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was stabbed in the back during a street attack in Cleckheaton.

Police believe 50-year-old Peter Brocklesby died after he was attacked by a gang of up to five people on Brooklyn Road, Cleckheaton, in the early hours of Saturday.

Officers were called to the area just before 1am after paramedics found the local man with a number of stab wounds.

Mr Brocklesby, of Brooklyn Road, Cleckheaton, was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination found the cause of his death to be stab wounds, however, a formal identification is yet to take place.

It is thought Mr Brocklesby had been trying to help resolve an altercation at a house party on the road when he was set upon by another group.

Police put out an appeal for witnesses and a 19-year-old woman was arrested for questioning on Saturday afternoon.

Three others were later arrested in connection with the incident.

A 19-year-old man was arrested later on Saturday. A second 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were both arrested from an address in the Castleford area in the early hours of Sunday.

Detectives investigating the incident have been granted extra time to question the 20-year-old woman.

All four remain in police custody.

Det Chief Insp Simon Bottomley, from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “Officers have established that the incident which led to this man losing his life stemmed from an altercation at a house party at a nearby property on Brooklyn Road.

“The police and ambulance service were called to Brooklyn Road at around 10 minutes to one in the morning, and we believe there were a large number of people in the area at the time.

“We remain keen to speak to anyone who witnessed either the incident, or has information which can assist our enquiries.”

The estate is made up of around four small blocks of flats and a residential home for the elderly.

Eyewitness and resident Wendy Belan was woken up by the disturbance.

The 32-year-old mum-of-two said: “We were all in bed but were woken by the noise outside. We thought nothing of it at first as we often hear shouting and fighting in the street.
