Man accused of father’s manslaughter granted bail

A FORMER teacher facing a manslaughter charge will not be attending the funeral of the father he is alleged to have killed.

A court yesterday granted bail to Jasknwal Rana, 32, is alleged to have killed his elderly father Tarsam Singh during an incident at the family home on Alder Street, Fartown, earlier this month.

Rana was initially remanded in custody by Huddersfield magistrates but during his first appearance at Bradford Crown Court a judge agreed to grant him bail with strict conditions.

The conditions include a ban on entering West Yorkshire except to meet his legal representatives or to attend court.

But his lawyer Carl Kingsley revealed during yesterday's hearing that a decision had been taken that his client should not attend the funeral.

Rana, who will be living at a sister's address in the Midlands, could stand trial on the manslaughter allegation in November and he is due to attend at the crown court again for a plea and case management hearing on August 15.

After hearing submissions about the case Judge James Goss QC said he was minded to grant Rana bail subject to a surety being put forward.

After a short delay in the proceedings the sister with whom Rana will be staying confirmed that she was able to put forward a surety of £5,000 which she could lose if he breaks any of the conditions of his bail or fails to attend court.

Judge Goss also ordered Rana to abide by an electronically-monitored curfew each night between 7pm and 7am and he will have to report to a local police station three times a week.

Rana's passport must also be surrendered and he is banned from applying for any other travel documents.
