COUNCILLORS have rubbished a proposal to bring back weekly bin collections.
The Government is expected to announce a £100m plan to persuade councils to dump fortnightly bin rounds.
Kirklees Council phased out weekly grey bin collections between 2006 and 2008.
More than half of English councils now collect household rubbish once every two weeks.
Environment secretary Caroline Spelman is expected to announce a £100m package of financial incentives designed to tempt these local authorities to bring back the weekly collections.
But yesterday a leading Conservative councillor said the current system was working well.
Clr David Hall helped introduce fortnightly collections when the Tories ran Kirklees from 2006 to 2009.
He said: “We’ve received very few complaints, in fact the system has worked very well.
“We’ll have to wait and see what the Government proposes but I think people in Kirklees are fairly happy with fortnightly bin collections.
“People are used to the system now and I hope it encourages them to recycle more.”
Clr Hall added that scrapping weekly bin collections had not harmed the environment.
The Liversedge and Gomersal man said: “There was a lot of hype at the time that we would see a big increase in foxes and vermin but that hasn’t happened.”
