Records broken as Honley Show celebrates
WHAT a week for Honley Show!
Show officials marked the start of it by collecting an Examiner Community Award in a glittering ceremony at Huddersfield’s Galpharm Stadium.
And they ended it by hosting a record-breaking show on their Farnley Tyas showground.
More people than ever flocked to the show, which also saw big increases in the entries in the agricultural classes.
“It makes all the hard work so worthwhile,” said a delighted show president Allen Turner as the last few classes took place.
“There is a tremendous amount of work put in to stage the show, for which I’d like to thank all those involved, but this is what we want. I think we have got things just about right.”
Even the weather was kind, despite the forecasts earlier in the week.
The thousands of show-goers were hit by a heavy shower in the middle of the morning but the rest of the day was bright, breezy and sunny.
Officials cannot put an exact figure on the numbers attending just yet but they believe they have exceeded the 2009 record of some 15,000 visitors by about 10%.
And those who did turn up were treated to everything – from ferret racing to a century of tractors, from battling giants to falconry.
A big attraction, of course, remains the animal classes and there were huge crowds packing into the marquees and show rings to see all that’s best of the cattle, sheep, goats and poultry from farms and smallholdings all over the region.
The horse sections went on well into the evening and the crowds never thinned out until late afternoon around the various arenas and the huge trade stands show.
Among the thousands of visitors were a pair who had travelled a little further than most.
