Marshalls directors take on The Italian Job

TWO employees of a Huddersfield-based firm are going more than the extra mile for charity.

Andrew Singleton and David Jackson, both sales directors of paving flag supplier Marshalls plc, will compete in a gruelling 96-hour rally.

The Italian Job – drawing its inspiration from the iconic 1969 film – will take 30 cars from Calais to Turin in a bid to raise £100,000 for the Prostate Cancer charity.

Andrew and David will be flying the flag for Birkby-based Marshalls – driving a Mini 1,400 miles across six countries with daily challenges along the way.

The rally sets off from the Kent coast next Thursday and will culminate in a spin around the top floor of Turin’s Lingotto Hotel – the former Fiat factory with a rooftop test track that featured in the memorable getaway sequence in the film.

Said Andrew: “We’re delighted to be representing Marshalls at the Turin rally and taking part in this event for such a worthy cause.

“We really hope that the rally not only raises plenty of money for The Prostate Cancer Charity but also helps raise awareness among anybody who sees the cars as they make their way through the UK and Europe.

“I only hope we don’t ‘blow the bloody doors off!’”

David said: “It will be a challenge, but it is being done in a ‘Top Gear’ style so it is going to be fun as well as being for a good cause.

“It is the first time either of us have done anything like this, although we have been involved in Marshalls charity events for local schools, hospitals and so on.

“It is really nice to be doing something for a charity which resonates with us fellas.”

Andrew and David will be backed by a team of mechanics. They plan to share the driving in short spells of 90 minutes – with the co-driver also keeping followers up to date with their progress on Facebook and Twitter.

Said David: “The Italian Job was made in 1969, which was the same year as the first moon landing.
