Special moment of remembrance for veterans
HUDDERSFIELD Army veterans stood to attention in the town centre to mark the start to Armed Forces Week.
Around 30 members of the veterans, paraded opposite Huddersfield Town Hall to watch Deputy Mayor Clr Christine Iredale raise the flag on the building.
Afterwards the veterans had a short service at their memorial in Edgerton cemetery which was led by Canon Stephen Henry.
The last post and reveille was sounded and the service was read by veterans’ group chairman Major John Wakely.
Armed Forces Week honours servicemen and women of all ages, past and present.
This year is especially poignant in Huddersfield coming so soon after the tragic death of Almondbury bomb disposal expert Capt Lisa Head in April.
The 29-year-old was working on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan’s deadly Helmand province when she suffered appalling injuries and died soon after being flown back to hospital in the UK.
