A BOWLER from Huddersfield has gone missing in South Africa, where he now lives.

Phil Brown was last seen in his home town of Franschhoek, 50 miles east of Cape Town, in February.

Mr Brown is thought to have returned to his native Huddersfield for an operation.

It is believed Mr Brown, who is thought to be in his mid-60s, still has family in the area.

Mr Brown, a metal worker, disappeared without telling anybody, leaving his tools at his workshop and his bowls at Franschhoek Bowling Club, where he regularly played.

Concern has been mounting at the club for Mr Brown as he had been seen in a depressed state.

Mr Brown, who is believed to be single, has worked as an engineer in Namibia, South Africa and for an American company in Iraq.

He is a talented bowler and is believed to have been asked to play for the Namibian national team.

He has a sister in Cape Town and played bowls in Huddersfield before he emigrated.

Stewart Maclean, who knew Mr Brown through Franschhoek Bowling Club, said: “He seemed really down in many ways.

“He was a personable but private individual.

“He left Huddersfield a long time ago but, chances are, his family is still there.

“The rumour is he had returned to the UK for an operation and his sister had paid for him to come back.

“When people get down they tend to head home.

“He was a national standard bowler. For him it wasn’t a hobby – it was more than that.

“A group of Phil’s friends from Franschhoek are very concerned for his wellbeing and would appreciate if anyone knowing of his whereabouts could give them some reassurance.”

Mr Brown is described as white, about 5ft 9in and slim.
