Huddersfield shop accused of selling alcohol and cigarettes to under-18s

A HUDDERSFIELD newsagents has been accused of repeatedly selling alcohol and cigarettes to under-18s.

The Off License at Longroyd Bridge has failed three so-called test purchases in the last year.

In each case staff allegedly sold cigarettes and alcohol to under-18s who had been sent into the shop by West Yorkshire Trading Standards.

Councillors will decide next week whether to revoke the licence of the Manchester Road newsagent’s.

Pc Richard Woodhead, from West Yorkshire Police, has compiled a report on the shop for Kirklees Council’s Licensing Panel.

Last April police received reports that The Off License was selling cigarettes and alcohol to under-18s.

According to Pc Woodhead, the shop failed test purchases on July 31, 2010 and February 5 and April 9 of this year. In each case, a member of staff allegedly sold cigarettes and alcohol to an under-age customer.

Pc Woodhead added there had been problems with the security cameras at the shop.

He wrote: “On March 4, 2011 I visited the shop to carry out a licensing visit when it was found the CCTV was not fitted and the cameras were only ‘dummy cameras’ and therefore in breach of the conditions of the licence.”

Pc Woodhead added that shopkeeper Naseem Sarwar agreed to stop selling alcohol until the cameras were fixed.
