FORGET London 2012!

The Olympics came a year early to the Huddersfield area when Holmfirth High School held its own games yesterday.

And what a spectacle it was!

The day started with an opening ceremony where every pupil walked around the sports track on the school fields, off Heys Road.

Each form wore outfits to celebrate the culture of the country they chose to represent.

An official song was composed by students and a mass Olympic dance performed to accompany it.

Lessons based on Olympic values and history were taught to the 1,300-pupils, while the school canteen served up food with international flavours.

Displays by community and sports organisations were staged at lunchtime, in addition to a variety of track and field sports events.

Donald Cumming, assistant headteacher, said: “This really was an exciting day and one that was very different to the usual school sports event.

“We see it as a warm-up for the 2012 Olympics that goes beyond the typical sports day.”

Head of PE, Jon Battye added: “Each class represented a country and we had an official opening ceremony around the track.

“We also had a variety of cuisines in the dining room and medals given out during the day. It was great success.”
