ACTRESS Lena Headey will play the lead villain in comic book superhero film Dredd.

The Shelley woman will star as Madeline Madrigal, aka Ma-Ma, in the £37.9m movie which follows the fortunes of Judge Dredd – a futuristic law enforcer in Mega City One.

The flick, due to be released in 2012, has been shot in 3D.

And it will also star Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson, Langley Kirkwood as Judge Lex and Francis Chouler as Judge Guthrie.

Lena, 37, has come a long way since she was talent-spotted in a Shelley High School production at the Royal National Theatre.

She has starred as Spartan Queen Gorgo in the blockbuster 300.

And played Sarah Connor on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

The mother-of-one was also the leading role of Cersei Lannister beside Sean Bean in fantasy epic Game of Thrones.

And she has performed alongside Sir Michael Caine, Vanessa Redgrave, Jeremy Irons, Roy Winstone and Sir Anthony Hopkins during her career so far.

Sylvester Stallone starred in the original film adaptation of the iconic Judge Dredd in 1995.

Karl Urban will play Dredd in the new film which he promises will be very different to the last.

The Stallone film was criticised for being untrue to the comics – such as showing Dredd repeatedly showing his face, embarking on a love affair with another judge, and having a comic side kick.

Judge Dredd began life as a character in British Science Fiction Comic 2000AD back in 1977.
