MOTHERS and toddlers from a playgroup cut the ribbon to open a new supermarket in Huddersfield.
Members of Christ Church playgroup joined store manager Mark Caine for the opening of the new Asda store at Carr Pit Lane, Aspley – which attracted lengthy queues.
The premises, formerly owned by Netto, have re-opened under the Asda banner after a £500,000 facelift.
Leeds-based Asda said the store would stock more than 10,000 grocery products – four times as many as Netto.
The Aspley store is one of 147 Nettos across the country which are being converted into Asda outlets.
Netto staff have transferred to Asda and have undergone a week-long retraining course. Eleven new posts have also been created at the Aspley store.
In addition, Asda has plans for a 49,000sq ft store which it wants to build, on land currently occupied by Thomas Broadbent and Sons between the ring road, Chapel Hill, Milford Street and Queen Street South.
However, the retailer has been unable to resolve planning issues.
