MEXICO may be famous for many things – but not Rugby league.

But young rugby players in Huddersfield will compete in a tournament this weekend in honour of their fans in Mexico.

Matthew Quade, 11, and his eight-year-old brother Carson follow the fortunes of Slaithwaite Saracens – despite living 5,625 miles away in the city of San Jose del Cabo.

The two boys – whose grandparents emigrated from Huddersfield more than 40 years ago – are in England at the moment visiting their friend Jamie Kelly, 12, from Slaithwaite.

The Colne Valley High School pupil plays loose-forward for the Saracens Under-13 team.

His grandfather Bob Brown, 67, has organised a tournament on Saturday in honour of the team’s Mexican fans.

The Crimble man said: “There’s no rugby league over in Mexico but these lads have been following Jamie’s progress over the years.

“They had never been to England before and they were so excited to see Jamie play, but unfortunately it’s out of season.

“I decided to arrange this festival so they could see them play.”

Saracens under-13s will take on Lindley, Underbank and King Cross in the four-team tournament at the Glen on Saturday from midday.

Bob, who is public relations officer for the Saracens, added: “I think it’s great that the lads wanted to come over and we’re going to get them to present the cup at the end.”

Jamie said: “I’m proud that we’ve got fans in Mexico. I think we’ll definitely win the tournament.”

Carson is keen to watch a live rugby match for the first time.

“I’m looking forward to watching the games,” he said.

“It looks like a fun game. I like it when they tackle each other.”
