VANDALS smashed windows and tried to set fire to a carpet store.

United Carpets, Union Street, was targetted last night in a series of minor disturbances across the town.

But the yobs fled after they were approached by security guards from the adjacent Richmond Flats.

Store manager Dean Critchley said: "Nothing was stolen. They tried to set fire to a carpet sample and they were disturbed by security guards in the flats.

"It's going to cost £1,000 to replace the windows but it's business as usual today."
